Technological and pedagogical aspects of synchronous virtual classroom in distance  teaching

Euroepan PhD

From a quantitative and qualitative methodological approach the research analyzes the technological changes in recent decades in education, the changes that lead to redefine the educational and methodological framework in teaching according to the evolution of a new profile of teachers and students.

The objectives for this research were as follows:
1. Synthetically analyze technological and methodological developments observed in the field of education science and the respective consequences for the social and behavioral profile of the students, and also its impact on the teaching and learning process.
There has been an emphasis on the use of virtual classrooms.
2. Compare virtual classrooms available, hardware-based and software-based, and what better serve the learning process for both the student and the teacher.
Also compared on technological standpoint classrooms known and commercially available software based.
3.
Describe the tools desirable and essential for the proper functioning of the virtual classroom, according to the pedagogical point of view.
4.
Analyze general and specific aspects of the operation of the virtual classroom and their use from an educational perspective, with special attention to didactic communication, online tutoring and formative evaluation.

The work is organized in four phases:

1.
Nature of the research problem: description of the context and the problem presented in the thesis.
2.
Theoretical foundation: theoretical principles of education science and technology on which the thesis is based.
3.
Empirical work: development of quantitative and qualitative analysis on the performance of synchronous virtual classrooms.
4.
Discussion and conclusions.

The main conclusions of the thesis focus on the following aspects:
1. The evolution of e-learning: the tendency there was the e-learning 1.0, with uni directional distribution activities of contents in printable documents, to the e-learning 2.0 with asynchronous interactive activities, for the current format of the e-learning 3.0 with
synchronous interactive activities in virtual classroom and content distributed Multimedia in format.
2.
Need for new models ID (Instructional design) integrating synchronous activities and related taxonomies.
3.
Comparative analysis of synchronous virtual classroom based on "hardware" and "software".
4l.
Analysis of available resources synchronous virtual classroom.
5.
Educational implications of using synchronous virtual classrooms in higher education.
6.
Methods and good practice in the use of synchronous virtual classrooms.

The future research are proposed related to the following fields of research:

1.
On models and taxonomies ID integrate synchronous virtual activities.
2.
Using synchronous virtual classrooms disabled.
3.
Using 3D/MUVES virtual environments (Second Live and Active Worlds).
4. About the skills of teachers for  the school of the future.
